Carnivorous Plant Care Guide

General Info

  • Carnivorous plants typically grow in nutrient-deficient swamps and bogs.

  • There are many types of carnivorous plants! A few of the most common include the venus fly trap, pitcher plant, and sundew.

Soil

  • To mimic their natural environment, it is best to keep carnivorous plants in a low-nutrient substrate.

    • Examples include sphagnum and peat moss.

Water

  • Keep the soil wet at all times. Carnivorous plants do not like to dry out!

  • Some carnivorous plants like to sit in water (ex: sundew, sarracenia)

Fertilizer

  • DO NOT FERTILIZE! Carnivorous plants get their nutrients from the bugs they trap.

  • Fertilizing your carnivorous plant will do it more harm than good.

Light

  • Carnivorous plants prefer bright, warm conditions.
